Walter Ostrom

Walter Ostrom has been a major force in the earthenware revolution that began during the seventies. His first major show was in 1976, using Nova Scotia clay at the Art Gallery, Mt. St, Vincent University. Since then he has participated in more than 100 group and solo shows throughout North America, the United States, Asia, and Europe. His work has appeared in numerous books and periodicals and has been collected by major institutions inc;luding; the Museum of Civilisation, Ottawa, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Educated in Europe and the United States, Ostrom came to Canada in 1969 to teach ot the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He was visiting professor at the Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute, Jiangxi, People's Republic of China which awarded him an Honarary Professorship in 1997. An outstanding educator, he is committed to Craft practice and theory.

He is married to Elaine Dacey. Thet have three children: Benjamin, glassblower, Ingrid, goldsmith, and Mariette, currenty enrolled in costume studies. Together they have built a studio, home, and garden in Indian Harbour, Nova Scotia that extends vernacular styles and indigenous flora.
